Pulling off the I-77, or cruising in from the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 229, the town of Elkin might seem somewhat unassuming at first glance. Just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, rocky ridges smooth out into the rolling hills and lively mountain streams known as the North Carolina Piedmont. NC Tripping offers access to a huge audience with multiple advertising options.
When to Visit AND Avoid Crowds

While it’s an easy-to-reach waterfall from the namesake trailhead, there are multiple options for you to reach the Yadkin Valley waterfall. When you emerge from the campground you’ll be on Martin Byrd Road. You can walk on the trail next to the farm and stay off the road. In the distance in the above picture you can see the parking area for Carter Falls, at the intersection with Pleasant Ridge Road. Thanks to its lovely downtown, beautiful surroundings, and yes, the wineries, we think you’ll never stop finding fun things to do in Elkin.
Pilot Mountain State Park
Lower falls will be the next major landmark, with a couple of options for seeing it, too. There’s a spacious platform for you to view lower falls from a distance. You’ll then hike a couple of switchbacks before reaching the portion of the trail that sits alongside the top of the falls (aka “Upper Falls”). Late December through early March are Charlotte's coldest months, with highs in the low 50s F and lows hovering around freezing. Christmas through January is a quiet time in the city, with fewer tourists, cheaper flights, and lower hotel fares. Spring has average highs ranging from 59 degrees F (15 degrees C) in March to a warm 81 degrees F (27 degrees C) in May, with low temperatures comfortably above freezing.

You can lookup U.S. cities,or expand your search to get the world distance for internationaltrips. A visitor came in search of land to build his family vacation home. He visited many tracts of land over a period of three months in different areas in the state of North Carolina.
You’ll pass a footbridge and what looks like an abandoned structure on the left before eventually reaching the parking lot. The straight line flight distance is 5 miles less than driving on roads, which means the driving distance is roughly 1.1x of the flight distance. North Carolina is centrally located on the East Coast of the United States, which means it’s within a day’s drive or flight from cities throughout the Northeast, Midwest and South. With nonstop flights to international airports and the nation’s second-largest state-run highway and ferry systems, it’s easy to get where you’re going – and enjoy the ride along the way. You have a choice of the Carter Falls Trail, which leads to the upper part of the falls, or the Powerhouse Trail, which leads to the base of the falls. If you want to experience both the top and bottom of the falls, it doesn’t matter which trail you take, because you can make a loop of it.
Before or after your hike, enjoy a wine tasting or shop for a bottle or two to bring home. Trails are being planned to connect Grassy Creek with three other wineries. Elkin is approximately 15 minutes south of Stone Mountain State Park, and 20 minutes from the entrance of the Blue Ridge Parkway off Hwy 21 (heading towards Sparta). Its downtown is also situated along the Yadkin River, and offers a paddlers boat ramp and small camp site.

The idea of forest bathing is that it’s meant to be done in solitude as a sort of nature therapy. It’s a half mile trail, so if you walked the whole thing and came back you’d add a mile to your trek. Read more about the Forest Bathing trail in Winston-Salem Journal. Creating these trails takes a tremendous amount of commitment and cooperation. An episode of Away Message , the podcast from Our State Magazine, explores how Elkin became a trail town. People have to come to agreement about where the trails should go.
thoughts on “25+ of the Best Things to Do in Elkin, NC, and Nearby (Wineries, Outdoor Fun, and more!)”
When you think of Carolina beaches, your first thought is probably Myrtle Beach. Or, if you watch as much Netflix as I did throughout the pandemic, the Outer Banks. While those are popular spots, I've always been a bigger fan of Wrightsville Beach. The water is cleaner and the beaches a little less crowded than Myrtle, and it's a much closer drive than the Outer Banks. While I no longer live there, I was always finding new hidden gems when I did call the city home.

Visiting Microbreweries
You can start exploring the outdoors while in Downtown Elkin, as multiple trails run through it. The Elkin Valley Trail Association (EVTA) has worked to connect the town’s trails Mountains-to-Sea Trail, which stretches from Clingmans Dome in Western NC to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks. Some of our favorites include “Forest Bathing” by Hand in Hand Creative (East Main St). The video that details their creation of this mural is fun to watch, too.
Out and back was about 4.5 miles, including some rambling around the waterfall. Except for the descent to the lower falls, which was aided by a rope suspended between trees, the walk was easy. Events have become a summertime monthly event and continue each year. Cruise events involve parking along Main Street as well as cruising around the downtown streets.

Built just before the Depression, the house changed hands a few times and was owned by some notable local names. One of the best things to do in Elkin is to choose where you’re staying. There are a few chain hotels just off I-77, including a Hampton Inn in Jonesville. Heading south to Wilkesboro (about 25 miles), anglers can find the W.
Elkin has become a successful and popular trail town because of the extensive network of trails running through it, and the welcoming attitude that the town shows hikers. Besides the Mountains to Sea Trail, you can also explore the Yadkin River “blue water trail” (by water), the Overmountain Victory Trail, the Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail-Trail, and more. Learn about all the trails, as well as upcoming events, on ElkinValleyTrails.org. If you want to see only the falls, you can park in a parking lot at the intersection of Pleasant Ridge Road and Martin Byrd Road.
Guided tours can last anywhere from two to six hours, with the longest tour launching from Roaring River for an 11-mile river run. Luckily, there are several options right outside of the town of Elkin. Five color-coded shuttle vans scoot off in different directions, and all of them are available with the purchase of a day pass.
Elkin had the biggest cruising community on the east coast during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. USA Today once featured Elkin and its cruisers on the front page of the national newspaper. A fundraiser was held to raise money to restore the historic Reeves Theater in downtown Elkin. For a $5 donation, participants would be given a decal for their car and then be allowed to cruise the former downtown cruising loop. After Lower Falls, you’ll follow a few inclined switchbacks and some slight incline before the trail straightens and mostly levels out.
A hydro station was built here in 1914 and helped power the town for many years. Just make sure that you're using a great credit card for gas and maximizing your hotel or Airbnb bookings. The “Enchanted Pine Forest” exemplifies the cooperation that went into creating this trail system. We parked at Grassy Creek Vineyard and Winery, 235 Chatham Cottage Circle, State Road, North Carolina.
Compare the results to thestraight line distance to determine whether it's better todrive or fly. The database uses the latitude and longitudeof each location to calculate distance using the great circledistance formula. The calculation is done using the Vincentyalgorithm and the WGS84 ellipsoid model of the Earth, whichis the same one used by most GPS receivers. This gives youthe flying distance "as the crow flies." Find your flightdistances quickly to estimate the number of frequent flyermiles you'll accumulate. Or ask how far is it between citiesto solve your homework problems.
